ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT-COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

Expected beginning date: Immediate

Full-time position

Position Description: The Associate Director of Development-Communications and Public Relations will assume responsibility for promoting and cultivating relationships within and outside the School community. This position oversees publications and printed and electronic communications to parents, alumni, donors, students, staff, faculty and the public. Other primary responsibilities include the School's website, annual magazine, press releases and aspects of donor stewardship. This position reports to the Director of Development. Core Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent; excellent writing skills and the ability to write on deadline; experience with print and electronic publications, website management and related software; ability to work independently on deadline-critical projects; media relations and project management experience; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Raiser's Edge software; experience in an independent school setting and in a development or non-profit setting preferred.

EQUITY AND INCLUSION COORDINATOR/HUMANITIES TEACHER

Expected beginning date: July 1, 2008

3/4-time position

Position Description: The Equity and Inclusion Coordinator reports to the Dean of Equity and Inclusion and the Humanities Department Chair and assumes a significant leadership role in the Athenian Community. The primary responsibility of the Equity and Inclusion Coordinator is to support the Dean in efforts to support all students in their personal growth related to inclusion, equity and justice, and to collaborate with adults similarly, both personally and in their support of students. Specifically, the Coordinator will: participate in the Students of Color organization and oversee its functions in both the Middle and Upper Schools; support the leadership of the affinity clubs; facilitate dialogue between students and faculty; coordinate School programs and events which focus on inclusion and equity; serve as a resource for adults in the community; sit on the Committee on Equity and Inclusion; teach three Humanities seminars related to issues of equity and inclusion. 

Core Qualifications: Commitment to inclusion and equity in support of students in grades 6 through 12; sensitivity to faculty and staff in their support of students; excellent leadership and communications skills; strong listening skills and ability to facilitate conversations among diverse groups; demonstration of strong classroom teaching in subject area(s); and two years classroom teaching experience. A four-year degree is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Direct experience in this area for two to three years; experience working in an independent school environment.

HUMANITIES TEACHER— UPPER SCHOOL POSITION (WORLD CULTURES)

Expected beginning date: August 1, 2008

Full-time position

Position Description: Upper School Humanities teacher (grades 9-12) will teach two sections of ninth grade World History, one year-long AP World History or AP European History course, one to two junior/senior world history-focused seminars and co-curricular duties as assigned.

Core Qualifications: Candidates should have a B.A. in World History and familiarity with AP history courses; three years of teaching experience; a passion for working with young people; and a desire to take part in a dynamic and diverse community of teachers and learners.

Preferred Qualifications: M.A. in World History; experience in teaching World and AP History courses.

LIBRARIAN ASSISTANT

Expected beginning date: August 25, 2008

Part-time hourly position

Position Description: The Librarian Assistant will supervise the Upper School Library from 3:30–6 pm Monday through Thursday and 7:30-9:30 pm Sunday through Thursday* during the school year and occasionally at other times as needed. Duties include: operating the circulation/reference desk; assisting students and faculty as needed; maintaining the Library facility; cataloging and collection projects; supervising and assisting boarding students during the evening Library Study Hours; and other duties as required. This position reports directly to the Library Director.

*Every other Monday evening shift will be covered by the Librarian instead.

Core Qualifications: At least one year of college; computer literacy; experience working with high school students.

Preferred Qualifications: Library experience or training.

This is a part-time hourly position with no employee benefit package provided. The rate of pay is $20 per hour.

SCIENCE TEACHER — MIDDLE SCHOOL POSITION

Expected dates: August 21, 2008 - October 31, 2008

Part-time position

Position Description: This position is available as the maternity leave replacement for a Middle School Science Teacher. This temporary position teaches two classes of life sciences to seventh graders and assumes all duties of a part-time teacher.

Core Qualifications: Degree in science; middle school teaching experience; energy and enthusiasm for young adolescents; positive attitude and organized; works well with other teachers; willingness to help further the School's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years experience teaching middle school; graduate degree in science; teaching certificate.

SPANISH TEACHER — UPPER SCHOOL POSITION

Expected beginning date: August 1, 2008

Full-time position

Position Description: Upper School Spanish teacher (grades 9-12) entails teaching four sections of Spanish, levels I–V (depending on the year). Faculty also serve as advisor to 10 students, oversee a community service activity, assume responsibility for four weekends of residential duty or physical education, and participate in orientations, all school events, morning meetings and special days.

Core Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish at the secondary level; native or near-native fluency in the language; advanced degree in Spanish; extensive knowledge of Spanish/Hispanic literature and culture; ability to work collaboratively; and familiarity with technology as a tool in teaching Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications: Native speaker with very strong English skills (both written and oral); minimum three years teaching experience in an academically challenging high school (preferably in independent schools); ability to teach advanced level courses in literature and culture; advanced degree in Spanish language or literature; experience and interest in curriculum design and development; and familiarity with AP Spanish courses.
