Athenian's international program prepares students from around the world to succeed in college and in life. International students achieve fluency in English, gain a strong academic background and develop an understanding of American culture. Students who need English support in grades 9 or 10 benefit from Athenian's rigorous ESL curriculum, among the oldest programs of its kind in California.
International students are welcome to apply in grade 9, 10, or 11, where our boarding program, staff, and curriculum support them. The Middle School (grades 6-8) is designed for local students only. International students applying to the Middle School should speak and write English fluently and live with an appropriate family member near Athenian.
We invite you to visit our campus and experience Athenian's classes and campus for yourself, however, campus visits and interviews are not required for international students. Due to extremely high demand for visits from international applicants, appointment times are limited and we are not able to interview all students. We will contact you if it is possible for us to interview you remotely. If you are able to come to campus, visits begin in late September each year. To schedule a visit, call 925-362-7223 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Applicants from China: Due to the high volume of applicants from China, Athenian is not able to interview applicants from China. Applicants from China to grades 9, 10, or 11 are strongly encouraged to contact Vericant to complete a preliminary interview in China. After reviewing Vericant interviews, Athenian will contact a small group of select candidates for an additional interview. Please complete Vericant interviews between August and January. Before contacting Vericant, please complete an Athenian admission inquiry form.
All international students must submit a test which demonstrates their English language ability. Athenian encourages students to submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL Junior or IELTS are also acceptable. A strong score on the verbal portion of the SSAT is also acceptable. The SSAT or ISEE are not required for international students.
Register early for these tests. To be included in the first round of admission decisions, please complete admission testing no later than February 15, 2017. Contact the Athenian Admission Office for more information at email@example.com.
