The Athenian Difference
With distinctive meaningful programs, The Athenian School goes far beyond preparing talented and diverse students for excellent colleges. Athenian empowers its graduates to become world citizens with lives of purpose and personal fulfillment. Most importantly, Athenian students develop a deep understanding of themselves, extraordinary skills for achievement, and the compassion to make a positive difference in the world.

Athenian's distinguishing features include: an engaging and exciting academic curriculum, award-winning community service, Middle School Focus Days, a required wilderness course in grade 11 and extraordinary international experiences. Other signature programs include: Town Meeting, Round Square, a championship robotics team and nationally-recognized environmental projects.

Located on 75 beautiful acres at the base of Mt. Diablo, the Athenian community includes day students, boarding students (in grades 9-12 only), and faculty families who live on campus. Athenian is the San Francisco Bay Area's only nonsectarian high school boarding program. Transportation and financial aid make Athenian accessible to a wide range of families from throughout the San Francisco East Bay.
Nearly all students gain admission to an outstanding and wide array of 4-year universities. Athenian helps students find the colleges or universities that best fit them.

What Athenian Looks For
In the admission process at Athenian, we look beyond the typical qualifications. While strong academic performance and test scores can show a student’s readiness for academic challenge, each student’s fit with Athenian’s philosophy and mission is also important. We look to see what each applicant will add to the mix of experiences, talents, backgrounds, and perspectives that forms the Athenian community.
