The Athenian School is a member of the Round Square Conference of Schools. Athenian is one of only four schools in the United States that belongs to the Round Square, which includes over 50 schools on five continents. All member schools have a commitment to service, international education, and outdoor adventure. Each year Upper School students from Athenian participate in exchanges to Round Square Schools, and students from those schools attend Athenian. Round Square sponsors several ongoing community service projects in diverse locations worldwide. The annual conference also includes an Athenian delegation of students and faculty. The Middle School participates in the Young Round Square organization, and hosted their annual conference in 2003 and 2004.
Round Square Exchanges and Service Projects
Opportunities exist for Upper School students to do both domestic and international exchanges, and service projects that range from four weeks to a year in length in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, and Australia. Students must be in good academic standing and active members of the Athenian community. The cost for most exchanges is transportation plus an incidental fee. Interested students need to contact the Round Square coordinator.
Internships
On and off-campus internships can be arranged on a part-time basis. These internships offer the opportunity for students to absorb professional hands-on experience where it is applicable to a student's professional and educational endeavors.
Independent Studies
Independent study can be approved for credit through the Academic Dean's office, if approved ahead of time by the advisor, Academic Dean, and faculty sponsor.
