Annual Fund

Unrestricted Giving = Unrestricted Possibilities

Unrestricted possibilities await your Athenian student this year.

Energetic discovery. Lively dialogue. Intellectual and physical adventure. Compassionate service. Global citizenship. Teachers who inspire each student to face challenges head-on, take risks, and pursue their passions.

These possibilities are enhanced through gifts to the Annual Fund, as tuition alone does not cover the cost of an Athenian education.

Gifts to the Annual Fund support a number of ongoing priorities, including:
  • Innovative programs
  • Talented and committed faculty
  • Student financial aid
  • Challenging and integrated curriculum

Please call us at 925-362-7212 if you have questions about the Annual Fund.

FAQ

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is a significant source of unrestricted revenue for the School. While tuition serves as our primary source of unrestricted operating funds, Athenian, like all independent schools, depends on revenue from the Annual Fund to meet our annual operating needs.
  • Q. Why is my participation important?

The Annual Fund provides flexible dollars to apply where they are needed most, impacting just about every aspect of School life. The Fund supports our inspiring and passionate teachers, ensures our small class size, and provides for hands-on learning such as Focus Days, AWE, Round Square and the many classes that will flourish in our new Carter Innovation Studio.

In addition to supporting yearly operating expenses, the Annual Fund also allows us to make the imagined possible. As the Athenian experience evolves – adding programs and staffing, growing financial aid, and improving facilities – the Annual Fund will help absorb the associated increases in operating expenses.
  • Q. How much should I give?

We encourage every member of the community to make a gift that is personally meaningful. Depending on family circumstances, that might be $100 or $50,000. Our leadership giving levels start at $5,000. It takes community-wide participation and gifts of all amounts to provide the support needed for the entire Athenian experience.
  • Q. When should I make my gift?

The Annual Fund kicks off in the fall and gifts are accepted until the end of the school year. Most families contribute to the Annual Fund between October and December each year. Gifts to the Fund are used in the school year they are received, so early and generous contributions are greatly appreciated!

This year’s Annual Fund campaign will begin in mid-October and you can expect to hear from the School and Athenian’s Annual Fund Parent Ambassadors starting in early October. If you’d like to make your gift before this time, please contact Karen Huff in Advancement at karen.huff@athenian.org or 925-362-7212.

We welcome contributions by check, credit card, or securities. You can also make a pledge in the fall and pay later. All pledges must be paid in full by May 15.

  • Q. Why doesn't tuition cover the full cost of an Athenian education?

In order to attract and retain the most talented students and faculty from all backgrounds, Athenian strives to keep tuition as low as possible and in line with our peer schools. Independent schools like Athenian rely on the Annual Fund to help make up the difference between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating each and every student. The majority of Athenian families participate by making a meaningful gift in keeping with their families' circumstances. These donations are tax-deductible, while tuition is not.
  • Q. Can I direct my gift to go to a specific program area?

Athenian’s Annual Fund is actually comprised of a Family of Funds that align with our every year expenses. While unrestricted gifts provide us with the most flexibility, you may direct your gift to any of these Funds and still have it count as your Annual Fund contribution.

The Annual Fund Family of Funds include:
    • Greatest Need (unrestricted)
    • Financial Aid
    • Faculty Enrichment (compensation and professional development)
    • Innovative Programs
    • Athletics
  • Q. I'm an alum, why is my participation important?

Many of our alumni tell us that Athenian was a transformative educational experience that prepared them for college and beyond. Just as annual gifts supported your education in your years at Athenian, your gift ensures that the School can provide the same remarkable experience for the current generation. In addition, strong alumni support provides a tangible measure of the value that graduates place on their Athenian education.
  • Q. How do I make a gift to the Annual Fund?

We welcome contributions by check, credit card, or securities. You can also make a pledge in the fall and pay later. All pledges must be paid in full by May 15.
