Annual Giving

Why Support Annual Giving?

Like most independent schools, Athenian’s operating expenses exceed the revenue from tuition and fees - in fact, an Athenian education costs about $5,000 more per student than tuition provides. We depend on our community of parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, trustees, faculty, staff and friends for voluntary support.

Annual giving benefits every one of our students directly and immediately, providing invaluable resources which let us offer an enriched experience. Your donations allow us to respond rapidly to new opportunities, helping us to offer the forward-thinking, adventurous, and rigorous programs that we’re known for. Sustained growth of Annual Giving will help ensure immediate needs are always met.
Gifts to the Annual Fund support a number of ongoing priorities, including:
  • Innovative programs
  • Talented and committed faculty
  • Student financial aid
  • Challenging and integrated curriculum
This year we are hoping for 100% parent participation in 100 days! Support Athenian today

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund benefits each student at Athenian. It supports the annual operating expenses of the School. Because tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we ask that all members of the Athenian community support the school through annual giving. This year we have a fundraising goal of $1,000,000, that will allow us to continue adapting our curriculum and the Athenian experience to an ever-changing and increasingly complex world.
  • Q. Why is 100% participation important?

Last year, the majority of Athenian families gave to the Annual Fund. With an operating budget of $18.8 million, we need your generous donation to help cover the expenses for key programs and activities that make Athenian truly special.

Annual Fund donations help support faculty salaries, outdoor education opportunities such as AWE, Round Square, Focus Fridays, a vibrant arts program, an expanding sports program, technology innovation through the Makers Studio and Robotics program, scholarships for low-income students, college preparatory counseling for student success and more. Without your support we would not be able to offer an Athenian education as we know it today.
  • Q. How much should I give?

All gifts, from $10 to $25,000 and everywhere in between, are very much appreciated. Our sincere goal is 100% parent participation. We ask that you make a gift that is meaningful to you. Your gift to the Annual Fund is tax-deductible. Our non-profit Federal Tax ID # is 94-6070808.
  • Q. When should I make a gift?

Please make a gift or pledge to the Annual Fund by December 31st. We kindly ask that you fulfill your pledge by June 30th.
  • Q. What if I cannot afford to make a large gift?

All gifts, no matter the size, are very much appreciated. Regardless of your financial resources, a donation of any size to the Annual Fund signifies your support of our mission and will inspire others to give, including major donors and foundations. You can also leverage your gift by asking your employer to match your gift to the School, if they have a matching gift program.
  • Q. How do I obtain a matching gift?

Many companies match gifts made by employees to nonprofit organizations such as The Athenian School. The matched gift counts toward your Athenian giving total, and your company receives recognition. Check with your human resources department about their matching gift opportunities and follow their procedures.
  • Q. Why doesn't tuition cover the full cost of an Athenian education?

In order to attract and retain the most talented students and faculty from all backgrounds, Athenian strives to keep tuition as low as possible and in line with our peer schools. Independent schools like Athenian rely on the Annual Fund to help make up the difference between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating each and every student. The majority of Athenian families participate by making a meaningful gift in keeping with their families' circumstances. These donations are tax-deductible, while tuition is not.
  • Q. I'm an alum, why is my participation important?

Many of our alumni tell us that Athenian was a transformative educational experience that prepared them for college and beyond. Just as annual gifts supported your education in your years at Athenian, your gift ensures that the School can provide the same remarkable experience for the current generation. In addition, strong alumni support provides a tangible measure of the value that graduates place on their Athenian education.
