Ninth Grade

Ninth graders can show off their experience and leadership in their last year of Adventure Camp, Theater Camp, and our Mini Hogwarts Camp. Combine camps with classes to see what the Athenian Upper School is like with classes taught by Athenian teachers, including our Comic Book Workshop with Kal or iFashion with Lori.

  • DMSC Counselors in Training

    Grades 8-10 (Limited to 18 Campers)
    Session s 1, 2, 3: Full Day

    Register early - This camp fills up quickly and closes at 18 campers!

    Prerequisite for Session 3: Returning CITs Only. During this session, we are opening the program to young leaders who have been through at least 1 CIT session. Attendance from any CIT session from any summer is acceptable.

    The CIT program will provide a hands-on opportunity to develop a variety of skills necessary for future employment as a camp counselor and for skills that will help them work with children. CITs will have a well-structured yet flexible series of workshops where they will have the opportunity to learn more about the different aspects of being a camp counselor and working with children. CITs will learn valuable leadership and communications skills and have the opportunity to participate in a self-motivated program designed around their ambitions to work towards their goal of being a camp counselor. CITs will develop the skills by participating in swimming, games, field trips, first aid and child safety as well as leadership and child psychology courses. Our goal is to give young people the opportunity to work under a qualified director and to begin to learn and understand the demands and responsibilities of a camp counselor’s job. Campers will look to CITs as leaders and role models, therefore, high standards of conduct, attitude and good judgment are expected at all times while working with campers.
     
    CIT’s will attend field trips with the Summit Seeker and Sports Campers. They will also go on 1 CIT-only field trip each session.
     
    CITs must be mature, have good listening skills, and be able to follow directions. Any camper who is interested in enrolling in the CIT program (even returning campers) must submit a teacher recommendation form which can be found on the website.
     
    Due to the limited spots available for this program, only full session enrollment is available.
    CITs will constantly be under review and will advance as they gain an understanding of how each camp functions and can show the ability to complete tasks as assigned by the directors and counselors. All CITs are required to participate in pool-time activities.
     
    The trend with Camp Counselors is that they return every summer, leaving few employment opportunities for those coming up the ranks. Therefore, completion of the Counselor in Training program does not guarantee a job with The Athenian School's summer program but, every effort is made to assist those who successfully complete the program in finding a job.

  • Dungeons & Dragons Workshop

    Grades 5—10

    The Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is about storytelling in make-believe worlds of sword and sorcery. In this game, a group of players create imaginary characters and band together to embark on an imaginary adventure.  D&D provides structure to these adventures by using a set of rules combined with an element of chance to determine the consequences of the characters' actions. Players roll dice to resolve whether or not their character is able to accomplish some heroic feat or daring gambit. Anything is possible, but the dice make some things more probable than others.
     
    Playing Dungeons & Dragons provides everyone opportunities to use and develop fundamental interpersonal, academic, and life-long skills.  Thanks to the nature of the game being set in an imaginary world, players get to learn how to solve problems, resolve conflicts, manage resources, overcome adversity, and how to work together as a team, all in a safe environment. Playing D&D gives players a chance to exercise their organizational skills, analytical skills, basic math skills, and their imaginations.  Players frequently need to be resourceful, resilient, and creative over the course of a game as a sudden plot twist in the story turns the characters' plans on their heads.  And because D&D takes place in a make-believe fantasy world, it offers unlimited potential for self-expression. It's most valuable benefit, however, is that it simply gives people a chance to play a fun game together face to face with their friends.
     
    In this 3-hour block students will spend time in the Carter Innovation Studio, where they will design and make their own characters, maps, and cards on our 3D Printers and laser cutters.

  • Get Fit with Nabil

    Grades 6—10
    Sessions: 1, 2, & 3, AM Half day

    Start your morning off right with a workout with Athenian’s fitness guru, Middle School health and fitness teacher, former Youth Development Coach at Red Bull, and Upper School JV soccer coach – Nabil Saad. Campers will work through a variance of blood-pumping activities in our Athenian’s new fitness center.
     

  • Improvisation Performance

    Grades 6-10
    Sessions: 1 & 2, AM Half day

    Do you like to act and perform?  Do you like to be creative and make up your own stories?  Improvisation is a class that teaches you how to create stories and scenes and perform them without a script.  In this class, you will learn the Three Rules which will give you the fundamental skills to do improvisation.  You will learn how to build interesting characters by observing and becoming other people.  You will learn the fundamentals of storytelling and how to keep an audience engaged in your performance and story.  And we'll do all of this in a safe, fun and team-oriented environment.  At the end of the class, we'll be performing our improvisation scenes for a live audience and showcasing all of the amazing things we have learned.

    Do you love film, TV and YouTube? Do you want to learn how to write, direct and act in your own videos and movies?  Filmmaking will teach you all of the skills to be your own movie studio or YouTube star. In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of shooting videos and expressing your ideas into image.  You will learn how to keep your audience watching by using suspense techniques in filmmaking.  You will learn how to move your audience by connecting them to your characters' stories in your films.  You will also learn how to create compelling performances for your videos or films.  Finally, you will learn how to put it all together and write, direct, act and shoot your own movies that will capture an audience anywhere.  
     

  • Outdoor Adventure Camp

    Grades 6—9

    Explore, hike, kayak, raft, and camp! 

    Session 1 includes a 3 day/2 night camping trip to Point Reyes. Session 2 includes a 3 day/3 night white water rafting and camping trip. You can read about the different session schedules of activities and trips by clicking on the Outdoor Adventure Calendar below. Lunch is provided on days campers are on campus. All food is provided on the overnight camping trips. 

    Attitude, motivation, and an interest in the outdoors are the keys to success in this camp.  

    If you love camping, hiking, exploring and being outside, then this is the camp for you!  This camp is for older campers wishing to explore the outdoor world while gaining new skills and abilities. For older campers, we have put together a co-ed camp where young people can experience the art of teamwork, outdoor skills, environmental stewardship, leadership skills as well as life skills. We provide a safe, non-competitive environment where campers can experience a wide range of outdoor activities. Campers will be able to use the skills they learn in each session on the variety of field trips they attend. Our goal is to develop in campers the enjoyment of the outdoors, the desire to return to the outdoors in their own lives, and concern for the continual preservation of the wilderness for future generations. In addition to an overnight trip planned each session, campers will attend numerous day field trips. We strongly encourage campers to leave electronics behind to enjoy and explore nature.    

    Lunch is included on days campers are on campus, and ALL meals are provided on overnight trips.  On day field trips, campers will pack or buy lunch.  Please refer to the session calendar which indicates which days you will need to pack a lunch. If a camper forgets a lunch, we will provide one; however, families will receive a bill for any days that they do not have a lunch on designated “pack a lunch day”. Our kitchen is not stocked to provide bagged camper lunches so, please do your very best not to forget. 

    Be sure to download the main calendar and the packing list, and waivers for off-campus trips off the website. All overnights will return to The Athenian School between 4:30 and 5 PM in order to have a full day on their last day of the campout before coming back to Athenian. 
    Items campers should bring/wear to camp daily are: 
    • 1 pair of sturdy shoes with good tread for hiking 
    • A reusable water bottle 
    • Sunscreen 
    • Bathing suit and towel for pool time (swimming option available on most days) 
    • A book, magazine or comic for daily reading time (25 minutes)

  • 3D Printer & Laser Cutter

    The 3D printing revolution is here!  Are you ready to be a part of it?  This beginner's class on computer aided design (CAD) and 3D printing will help you turn your ideas into reality. Campers will be introduced to SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software and other modeling applications as they dive into the concepts of computer aided design.  They will be shown how 3D printers are used to make a prototype come to life and will have the opportunity to use the 3D printers to make their designs come to life. Campers will come away with a new understanding of the powerful capabilities of 3D printing and rapid prototyping!
     
    Students will also learn how to use the laser cutter. They will have the opportunity to design, cut, and etch multiple projects of choice.

    Lori Harsch, a mechanical engineer, member of the Interdisciplinary Program Faculty, and Athenian Carter Innovation Studio Manager will share her skills while guiding students to develop their ideas.  A gifted teacher, coach, and mentor, this will be Lori’s forth summer season working with young people in the exciting world of engineering and science.
     

  • Archery

    Grades 6—9

    This non-competitive, introductory course will teach the fundamentals of archery. Certified instructors will teach students correct techniques, range safety requirements, procedures and equipment. Archery has a wide appeal for campers and is often the highlight of their summer. With coordination and focus, virtually everyone can learn this sport.

    Learn coding basics in Athenian’s Carter Innovation studio. This class is for beginners – no experience needed. Please bring your own laptop.

Players roll dice to resolve whether or not their character is able to accomplish some heroic feat or daring gambit. Anything is possible, but the dice make some things more probable than others.
     
    Playing Dungeons & Dragons provides everyone opportunities to use and develop fundamental interpersonal, academic, and life-long skills.  Thanks to the nature of the game being set in an imaginary world, players get to learn how to solve problems, resolve conflicts, manage resources, overcome adversity, and how to work together as a team, all in a safe environment. Playing D&D gives players a chance to exercise their organizational skills, analytical skills, basic math skills, and their imaginations.  Players frequently need to be resourceful, resilient, and creative over the course of a game as a sudden plot twist in the story turns the characters' plans on their heads.  And because D&D takes place in a make-believe fantasy world, it offers unlimited potential for self-expression.     Work in Athenian’s Carter Innovation Studio to design, create, build, a functioning pinball machine. Students will learn how to use multiple machines and tools in order to construct their machine. Come with a creative mind and energy toward trying to make something complex from scratch.

    This supervised free-swim time and activities at the pool will be a key part of your Summer of Awesome. We have a team of certified lifeguards to supervise swimmers along with our sports camp director and counselors. We maintain at least a 15:1 (or fewer) swimmer-to-lifeguard ratio, exceeding the American Red Cross standard.

    Jalyn Crum, Athenian Summer Aquatic Program leader, is passionate about all things water having grown up as a competitive USA swimmer and lifeguard/swim instructor.  She is thrilled to be back for a another season at Athenian to ensure a fun and safe environment in and around the pool, as well as, leading the lifeguards and swim instructors in providing a quality aquatic program for all Athenian Summer Program and rental groups.  Jalyn holds a California multiple subjects teaching credential and is an American Red Cross certified lifeguard instructor, first aid CPR and AED instructor, and Certified Pool and Spa operator (CPO).

  • Building Community Through Social Justice with Sanjev

    Grades 6-9

    Directed by Athenian Humanities teacher, Sanjev deSilva

    As members of the Athenian community, we very much believe in social justice and the importance of taking action in our local and global communities. In fact, a key portion of The Athenian School’s mission statement reads: “    We instill an appreciation of the reciprocal relationship between the individual and cultures, society and the natural world. We value the power and beauty of multiculturalism within our diverse community. We embrace the principals of democratic governance, stewardship of the environment, respect for human dignity, and service as a way of life.” This camp will leave campus on most days for humanitarian experiential excursions throughout the Bay Area. Sanjev brings decades of work with many social justice orientated organizations such as The Mosaic Project, Project Avary and others. Recently, he has worked with the Colin Kaepernick Foundation and he was responsible for bringing dozens of inner-city Bay Area youth to Kaepernick’s first ever “Know Your Rights Camp” in Oakland (you can find him on the front page of www.Kaepernick7.com). The other areas of activism that this camp will explore include environmental conservation, food equity in underprivileged communities, and hands-on design.  When Social Justice campers remain on campus, Sanjev will be inviting key guest speakers to share their experiences and lead discussions on how best to take action and help others.
     

  • Clay Sculpture with Jaci

    Grades 6—10

    Learn the art of clay sculpture from legendary Athenian Middle School art teacher Jaci Kildare. Students will investigate the style and themes of different artists who sculpt with clay, and work towards forming their own clay masterpieces over the two-week session. With this longer block, students will have the opportunity to draft, receive feedback, form, and create larger scale pieces to be glazed in the kiln. No experience needed. All materials included.

  • Innovators Workshop with Lori Harsch

    Experience all facets of Athenian’s Innovation Studio with engineering master Lori Harsch. Students will learn how to use the machines, technology, and tools in the shop while guided through projects of their choice. The design of this full-day camp is to provide young makers with the opportunity to learn, plan, tune, and build well-formed projects.

    Lori Harsch, a mechanical engineer, member of the Interdisciplinary Program Faculty, and Athenian Carter Innovation Studio Manager will share her skills while guiding students to develop their ideas.  A gifted teacher, coach, and mentor, this will be Lori’s forth summer season working with young people in the exciting world of engineering and science.
     

  • Mosaics with Jaci

    Enjoy an open studio focused on the art of Mosaic with legendary Athenian Middle School art teacher Jaci Kildare. Students will look at the style and themes of different mosaic artists, and have the opportunity to design and make tile and stone mosaics on different forms over the two-week session. No experience needed. All materials included.

    This supervised free-swim time and activities at the pool will be a key part of your Summer of Awesome. We have a team of certified lifeguards to supervise swimmers along with our sports camp director and counselors. We maintain at least a 15:1 (or fewer) swimmer-to-lifeguard ratio, exceeding the American Red Cross standard.

    Jalyn Crum, Athenian Summer Aquatic Program leader, is passionate about all things water having grown up as a competitive USA swimmer and lifeguard/swim instructor.  She is thrilled to be back for a another season at Athenian to ensure a fun and safe environment in and around the pool, as well as, leading the lifeguards and swim instructors in providing a quality aquatic program for all Athenian Summer Program and rental groups.  Jalyn holds a California multiple subjects teaching credential and is an American Red Cross certified lifeguard instructor, first aid CPR and AED instructor, and Certified Pool and Spa operator (CPO). 

  • Public Speaking/Debate

    One of the most important skills students can learn is to feel comfortable giving a speech or presentation in front of a group of people. This course will explore some of the techniques required to become an effective public speaker no matter what the venue. Students will learn how to deliver information effectively by practicing verbal technique, eye contact, body language, and word emphasis. There will be a final culminating speech project on the last day of class. The goal is to allow students to have fun, relax, and learn some new presentation skills.
     

  • Sewing Fundamentals

    Grades 6—9
    Session 3, Period c

    Sew Many Possibilities!

    Learning how to sew can open a world of creative possibilities. Once you have learned the basics, your imagination is the limit. This class offers the opportunity to learn and practice the fundamentals in sewing on a machine and by hand through fun simple projects. From a not-just-your-basic pillow to simple clothing options, students will design and create embracing their own individual sizes and style.

    Week One
    Learning the sewing machine and basic skills: Projects include a 3-dimensional pillow and a reusable shopping bag.

    Week Two
    Working with a pattern to fit: Projects include pajama top and shorts and yoga pants.
    Time permitting, students will have an opportunity to sew using a serger sewing machine.
     

  • The Athenian Theater Camp

    Grades 6-9

    Experience firsthand the fine art of the theater! Join us for this comprehensive program in the realm of creativity and “playing”! All main aspects of the theater will be explored in a genuine theater setting. In two weeks students will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of subjects. Students will become scriptwriters and help to complete the script of an almost complete play, be a makeup artist who applies the paint to the faces of the actors, learn the nuances of costume design and draping a figure, and be the set designer to create an environment for the characters to come to life!

    AM extended care is included in camp tuition. Afternoon extended care is offered for an additional fee.
    Please keep in mind any student or camper below the age of 14 may not be left unattended anywhere on campus from 7:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Extended care is available to all participants from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:45 to 6:00 PM. Students who arrive early must either go to extended care or be supervised by a parent until a teacher arrives. Campers in AM extended care spend time with our caring staff and we assist campers to arrive at their 9:00 AM program. We can also provide a delicious, healthy breakfast for an additional fee. Campers or students who arrive early may participate in the breakfast club and will not be charged for extended care.
     
    Families who will be using afternoon extended care, please make every effort to arrive by 6:00 pm. We recognize that there are times when unavoidable challenges arise and therefore, our policy is that after two occurrences of lateness, a $1.00 per-minute penalty will be incurred. That fee will be paid directly to the staff who must work overtime.

    You must be preregistered for the Breakfast Club, which costs $80 per session.

    You must be preregistered for the Breakfast Club. The kitchen will be open from 8:00-8:30 AM.  Breakfast is served cafeteria-style and may include any variety of fruit, yogurt, cereal, pancakes, eggs, waffles, bacon, sausage, home potatoes, and juice. Breakfast can be purchased in two-week sessions (ten breakfasts per session).

    At 8:00 AM, please go to extended care (Dase Center) and sign in. A counselor will walk children to the Main Hall at 8:00 AM for breakfast.   After 8:00 AM, campers may check-in with the group already at breakfast. We will accept registrations for Breakfast Club up to five days before the session starts. You cannot sign up for breakfast on the first day of a session. If you cancel your Breakfast Club registration on the first day, you will still be charged the full amount.                                      

    The Lunch Program – Included in all Full Day, ¾ Day, and Half-day Programs

    School lunch has never been this good. Our dining services use fresh ingredients and provide campers with healthy meals with plenty of options.  Our chefs create a well-balanced menu and our hot meal options include Asian, Italian, Mexican and American dishes.  In addition to buying produce and meat from local California farmers, we use vegetables and herbs from our organic garden whenever possible.  Meals are served cafeteria style in our dining hall and campers can return for seconds.  Our lunch program is included with all half-day or more program registrations.  Breakfast can be purchased for an additional fee.  We believe eating together builds community.
     
    Our chefs work with families as much as possible to accommodate food allergies. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are readily available.          
    • All lunches will be served in the Main Hall and always have hot, healthy kid-friendly options. Note: We do not provide lunch on field trip days. Campers will need to pack a lunch on field trip days.
    • Drinks include plain water, fruit-infused water, and milk. We do not provide soda and ask you not to bring it.

  • Private Swim Lessons

    $185 Eight 20-minute private lessons per session
    Private Swim Lessons offer on-one-one instruction, so no matter what swim level your child is at they will get the needed attention to develop or progress their skills, build their confidence and love the water. We offer lessons to children at all swim levels.  Little swimmers will discover how to fully submerge their face and blow bubbles and experience supported floating and kicking on front and back.  More advanced swimmers will begin to learn alternating arm action, swimming underwater, rhythmic breathing, basic diving, and the major swim strokes.  For swimmers ready for even more advanced techniques or siblings who would prefer to take lessons together, a program can be adapted to meet your swimmer’s individual needs.  
     
    No makes-ups for missed lessons. Upon registration, you are reserving a spot for your child and we will schedule an instructor based on your registration. We understand situations may occur that require last minute cancellations. However, it is not possible for us to reschedule, therefore, our policy is that we do not guarantee make-ups or offer refunds or credit for missed lessons.
     
    This summer we will not offer morning lessons. Swim lessons will start at 12:45 pm. Private Swim Lessons may be added during camp to PM DMSC Camp schedule. Classes can sign-up after Period D.

  • Registration Policies

    Find out how to change your schedule, what our sibling discount is, and which camps you can enroll in partial sessions by reviewing our policies, terms, and conditions.
    Students and Campers are enrolled in programs on a first come basis. Classes and camps have limited enrollment, therefore, early registration is recommended. In the event a class or camp you have registered for is full, you will be notified immediately and your child will be put on a waiting list. In the event a class is canceled, you will be refunded 100% of the cost of the class or camp.

    All registrations must be filled out online. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call the Athenian School and make an appointment to come in and register.  We credit cards. If you do not wish to pay your deposit with a credit card online, you can still register by selecting to “Pay by Check”.  However, checks must be received and paid in full with seven days of your registration.
     
    Partial Sessions
    While we think it’s best for a camper to participate in a full two-week session of camp we understand it does not always work out with your family’s schedule. We can make accommodations for Summit Seekers and Sports Camp. We are sorry but cannot accommodate partial participation in our academic program, CIT or Adventure Camp. Please contact the summer programs office to receive a discount code for your online registration and to have the dates you will be attending noted in your registration.

    We offer a wide variety of options for summer and understand it can be a little overwhelming when trying to combine classes with camps or making the best choice for your child. Please don’t hesitate to contact the summer program office for help. 

    Field Trips
    While we make every effort to send our students/campers on the field trips advertised, it is possible that a Director will need to change or substitute a particular field trip. In this case, no credits or refunds will be made. 

  • Safety, Traffic, & Nurse's Corner

    Safety on Campus
    For safety and supervision reasons students attending summer enrichment classes should not arrive too early of 9:00 AM for the first class. Students who must arrive early need to be registered for extended care. Parents may wait with their children outside of a classroom until the teacher arrives. 

    Traffic Safety
    In order to ensure safety for everyone, we need your help and cooperation. The traffic situation in the parking lot is a significant safety concern of staff and parents. Please, NO CELL PHONES IN THE PARKING LOT. Please honor the 5 mph speed limit. It is very important that you drive slowly and watch for children. If you want to walk your children to their classrooms, please park in the lower parking lot, cross at the crosswalk and walk up on the road closest to the soccer field. Please do not walk down the center of the road.

    Nurses Corner
    Please keep your child home if he or she has a high temperature, an aggressive cough that is difficult to control with over the counter medications, or a runny nose that may indicate an infection.

    Only medications that cannot be timed to be administered at home should be sent to school. (Medications to be given 3 times a day usually can be taken before and after school and at bedtime).

    All medications must have an accompanying written statement from the physician detailing the purpose and method of dispensing the medication. Prescription medications must be labeled clearly and in the original dispenser.

    Children who will carry asthma inhalers or EpiPens must fill out a statement from the physician indicating the child understands the purpose, appropriate method, and frequency of use of the emergency medication.  This information is to be included in your health notes and the physician statement is to be turned into the summer school nurse.

    The nurse will not be on campus after August 5, 2019. If you need any medications returned, it is your responsibility to contact the nurse to set up a time you can come to campus. 

  • Transportation

    Transportation is available in the morning and afternoon. You may sign up for one-way or round-trip service.

Our caring transportation professionals will make your life a little easier by picking up your child at one of our designated stops and returning them back to your at the end of the day. In an effort to join us as we do our part in reducing traffic and bringing campers together from throughout our region, enroll in our transportation program. You can sign up your child for round-trip or one way only.
