Third Grade

In addition to our classic camps, third graders can take fun science classes, tune up their math and writing skills, throw pottery, or learn basic etiquette. Create a summer of awesome for your third grader at Athenian!

  • Poetry & Performance

    Does your child enjoy writing poetry? Do they like performing? This is a class that will combine both! In this spoken word style workshop, students will learn about spoken word methods, write their own poems, and have the opportunity to perform them in class and in camp.

    Sports Camp provides a non-competitive, fun, and engaging atmosphere for girls and boys of all skill levels. It is not necessary to have sports experience. Our diverse and energetic staff is committed to teaching a variety of sports and athletic games along with camp specialties (Nitroball, Ultimate Capture the Flag, Broomball) and learning ones they might not even know existed. 
    Lunch is served at 12:00 PM. Half day campers are welcome to join us for lunch. Please note the above times for pick-up and/or drop-off. 

    Full day campers have the opportunity to swim during open pool time, enjoy an outdoor activity, and each week campers will go on a field trip.     Summit Seekers is filled with engaging activities that will give your child an unforgettable summer. Campers will participate in age-appropriate games, arts and crafts, non-competitive sports and outdoor activities. Led by fun and engaging teachers, morning campers will experience creative problem-solving activities connected to the session theme.
     
    From 9:00 AM to lunchtime, full day and morning campers will be inspired by our awesome camp directors. In a safe setting, campers will be grouped by age with a dedicated credentialed teacher, camp counselors and caring counselors-in-training (CIT).
     
    Lunch is served at 12:00 PM. Half day campers are welcome to join us for lunch. Please note the above times for pick-up and/or drop-off. Full day campers have the opportunity to swim during open pool time, enjoy an outdoor activity, and at the end of each session campers will go on a field trip. There will be one on-campus experience on the first Friday of the session, and one off-campus field trip on the second Friday of the session.

    Session 1 Theme: County Fair
    Celebrate the county fair camp style! Campers will make cotton candy, snow cones, hot air balloons, Ferris wheels, make their own cardboard arcade games (skee ball, balloon darts, rings on bottles, etc.), create a giant camp paper quilt, play a variance of fair-style games and competitions.

    Session 2 Theme: Mad Scientists
    Summer fun with science experiments! Campers will make edible concoctions, volcanoes, pop rockets, crazy crystals, model airplane wings, build marble tracks, design catapults, set domino traps, make slime, and learn the skill of blowing up a watermelon with rubber bands.
     
  • Young Writers & Math Fun

    Grades 2—3
    Session 1, AM Half day

    This long block will be broken into two academic sections: working on writing skills, and having fun with grade-level appropriate math games. This class is designed to be fun while keeping the academic mind growing over summer.

    Students will use hand building and sculpture techniques, taking the clay from an initial wet clay stage through bisque and glaze firings. No previous experience required.

    We are delighted for Kristen Calderon to return to Athenian Summer Programs and share her talents as both an artist and caring teacher.

  • Etiquette for Kids

    Grades 3—6

    Etiquette for kids is a confidence-building program that will teach children to handle dining and social situations with ease. Your child will learn important social skills such as how to meet and greet people, how to address adults, giving and accepting compliments and most importantly, the ABC’s of dining. This class will include the uses of silverware, glasses, which knife and fork to use, posture at the table, and other dining do’s and don’ts. Best of all, they will collaborate with Miguel’s cooking class to have a chance to practice all of their new skills in a formal dining setting.
  • Mathtastic!

    Students will create beautiful works of art created using numbers. Who knew Connect the Dots could be so much fun and look so stunning? Patterning, tessellations, mosaics, and more will show us the beauty of numbers in artistic expression.
  • Mel's STEM Lab

    Grades 3-6
    Session 2, Period C

    Campers will plan, create, measure, collaborate, graph, and reconsider their creations for an improved outcome. Together we will explore how things work and ask questions to understand what we observe. Each day we will have a new problem to tackle.

    Melissa Barry Hansen will return to teach this fantastic class she created. Melissa, a veteran elementary school teacher and Athenian alumna shines as a master teacher and brings her love of young people to all that she does.
  • Open Pool Time

    This supervised free-swim time and activities at the pool will be a key part of your Summer of Awesome. We have a team of certified lifeguards to supervise swimmers along with our sports camp director and counselors. We maintain at least a 15:1 (or fewer) swimmer-to-lifeguard ratio, exceeding the American Red Cross standard.

    Jalyn Crum, Athenian Summer Aquatic Program leader, is passionate about all things water having grown up as a competitive USA swimmer and lifeguard/swim instructor.  She is thrilled to be back for a another season at Athenian to ensure a fun and safe environment in and around the pool, as well as, leading the lifeguards and swim instructors in providing a quality aquatic program for all Athenian Summer Program and rental groups.  Jalyn holds a California multiple subjects teaching credential and is an American Red Cross certified lifeguard instructor, first aid CPR and AED instructor, and Certified Pool and Spa operator (CPO).

    This enrichment class is very similar to Art Academy, but for our younger campers. It is a class that provides guided activities for kids to delve into their creativity. You could be making lanyards, painting, scrapbooking, molding sculptures from clay, making your own stationery – every day will have different mediums and projects!  Come ready to make new friends and try your hand at new artistic styles and crafts – especially the ones you don’t have time for in your classes during the busy school year. This is just what summer is for!
  • Young Writer's Workshop

    Grades 3—4
    Session 2, Period B

    Learn how to improve your writing prowess while exploring various writing skills. This course will reinforce the fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Students will concentrate on how to write in various styles, how to proofread and dictionary practice.

    DMSC Little Owls is back this summer – simply put, it is a hybrid of Sports Camp and Summit Seekers – students will move through the day as a large cohort. The morning with be focused on sports and games, after lunch will be focused on artistic craft activities, and the day will end with open pool time for everyone. Private swim lessons can be added during or after camp for an additional fee.
  • Drawing & Painting

    Grades 3—6
    Session 3, Period C
    $215
    Students will learn about the illustration and painting techniques of famous artists and attempt recreations. Some days will contain drawing and painting, some will be focused on drawing, and some will be focused on painting. Lots of beautiful work will be coming home from this enrichment class!
  • Gear Up!

    Grades 1, 2, 3 (3 separate sections)

    Summer is almost over and it’s time to switch gears and think about the upcoming school year. Is your child prepared? Modeled after our Back to Basics program, students will have two weeks of instruction in reading, writing, and math. The curriculum is aligned to California state standards for each grade level. Start the school year off with an academic boost and be prepared to succeed.

  • Rollercoaster Engineering

    Grades 3—5

    This class is for the thinkers, builders, and problem solvers. Students will use everyday materials to design and construct rollercoaster courses for ping pong balls, marbles, or bouncy balls. They can work individually, in design teams, or as an entire cohort – the choice is up to them!

    AM extended care is included in camp tuition. Afternoon extended care is offered for an additional fee.
    Please keep in mind any student or camper below the age of 14 may not be left unattended anywhere on campus from 7:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Extended care is available to all participants from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:45 to 6:00 PM. Students who arrive early must either go to extended care or be supervised by a parent until a teacher arrives. Campers in AM extended care spend time with our caring staff and we assist campers to arrive at their 9:00 AM program. We can also provide a delicious, healthy breakfast for an additional fee. Campers or students who arrive early may participate in the breakfast club and will not be charged for extended care.
     
    Families who will be using afternoon extended care, please make every effort to arrive by 6:00 pm. We recognize that there are times when unavoidable challenges arise and therefore, our policy is that after two occurrences of lateness, a $1.00 per-minute penalty will be incurred. That fee will be paid directly to the staff who must work overtime.

    You must be preregistered for the Breakfast Club, which costs $80 per session.

The kitchen will be open from 8:00-8:30 AM.  Breakfast is served cafeteria-style and may include any variety of fruit, yogurt, cereal, pancakes, eggs, waffles, bacon, sausage, home potatoes, and juice. Breakfast can be purchased in two-week sessions (ten breakfasts per session).

    At 8:00 AM, please go to extended care (Dase Center) and sign in. A counselor will walk children to the Main Hall at 8:00 AM for breakfast.   After 8:00 AM, campers may check-in with the group already at breakfast. We will accept registrations for Breakfast Club up to five days before the session starts. You cannot sign up for breakfast on the first day of a session. If you cancel your Breakfast Club registration on the first day, you will still be charged the full amount.                                      

    The Lunch Program – Included in all Full Day, ¾ Day, and Half-day Programs

    School lunch has never been this good. Our dining services use fresh ingredients and provide campers with healthy meals with plenty of options.  Our chefs create a well-balanced menu and our hot meal options include Asian, Italian, Mexican and American dishes.  In addition to buying produce and meat from local California farmers, we use vegetables and herbs from our organic garden whenever possible.  Meals are served cafeteria style in our dining hall and campers can return for seconds.  Our lunch program is included with all half-day or more program registrations.  Breakfast can be purchased for an additional fee.  We believe eating together builds community.
     
    Our chefs work with families as much as possible to accommodate food allergies. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are readily available.          
    • All lunches will be served in the Main Hall and always have hot, healthy kid-friendly options. Note: We do not provide lunch on field trip days. Campers will need to pack a lunch on field trip days.
    • Drinks include plain water, fruit-infused water, and milk. We do not provide soda and ask you not to bring it.
  • Private Swim Lessons

    Ages 4 and up
    $185 Eight 20-minute private lessons per session
    Private Swim Lessons offer on-one-one instruction, so no matter what swim level your child is at they will get the needed attention to develop or progress their skills, build their confidence and love the water. We offer lessons to children at all swim levels.  Little swimmers will discover how to fully submerge their face and blow bubbles and experience supported floating and kicking on front and back.  More advanced swimmers will begin to learn alternating arm action, swimming underwater, rhythmic breathing, basic diving, and the major swim strokes.  For swimmers ready for even more advanced techniques or siblings who would prefer to take lessons together, a program can be adapted to meet your swimmer’s individual needs.  
     
    No makes-ups for missed lessons. Upon registration, you are reserving a spot for your child and we will schedule an instructor based on your registration. We understand situations may occur that require last minute cancellations. However, it is not possible for us to reschedule, therefore, our policy is that we do not guarantee make-ups or offer refunds or credit for missed lessons.
     
    This summer we will not offer morning lessons. Swim lessons will start at 12:45 pm. Private Swim Lessons may be added during camp to PM DMSC Camp schedule. Classes can sign-up after Period D.

  • Registration Policies

    Find out how to change your schedule, what our sibling discount is, and which camps you can enroll in partial sessions by reviewing our policies, terms, and conditions.
    Students and Campers are enrolled in programs on a first come basis. Classes and camps have limited enrollment, therefore, early registration is recommended. In the event a class or camp you have registered for is full, you will be notified immediately and your child will be put on a waiting list. In the event a class is canceled, you will be refunded 100% of the cost of the class or camp.

    All registrations must be filled out online. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call the Athenian School and make an appointment to come in and register.  We credit cards. If you do not wish to pay your deposit with a credit card online, you can still register by selecting to “Pay by Check”.  However, checks must be received and paid in full with seven days of your registration.
     
    Partial Sessions
    While we think it’s best for a camper to participate in a full two-week session of camp we understand it does not always work out with your family’s schedule. We can make accommodations for Summit Seekers and Sports Camp. We are sorry but cannot accommodate partial participation in our academic program, CIT or Adventure Camp. Please contact the summer programs office to receive a discount code for your online registration and to have the dates you will be attending noted in your registration.

    We offer a wide variety of options for summer and understand it can be a little overwhelming when trying to combine classes with camps or making the best choice for your child. Please don’t hesitate to contact the summer program office for help. 

    Field Trips
    While we make every effort to send our students/campers on the field trips advertised, it is possible that a Director will need to change or substitute a particular field trip. In this case, no credits or refunds will be made. 
  • Safety, Traffic, & Nurse's Corner

    Safety on Campus
    For safety and supervision reasons students attending summer enrichment classes should not arrive too early of 9:00 AM for the first class. Students who must arrive early need to be registered for extended care. Parents may wait with their children outside of a classroom until the teacher arrives. 

    Traffic Safety
    In order to ensure safety for everyone, we need your help and cooperation. The traffic situation in the parking lot is a significant safety concern of staff and parents. Please, NO CELL PHONES IN THE PARKING LOT. Please honor the 5 mph speed limit. It is very important that you drive slowly and watch for children. If you want to walk your children to their classrooms, please park in the lower parking lot, cross at the crosswalk and walk up on the road closest to the soccer field. Please do not walk down the center of the road.

    Nurses Corner
    Please keep your child home if he or she has a high temperature, an aggressive cough that is difficult to control with over the counter medications, or a runny nose that may indicate an infection.

    Only medications that cannot be timed to be administered at home should be sent to school. (Medications to be given 3 times a day usually can be taken before and after school and at bedtime).

    All medications must have an accompanying written statement from the physician detailing the purpose and method of dispensing the medication. Prescription medications must be labeled clearly and in the original dispenser.

    Children who will carry asthma inhalers or EpiPens must fill out a statement from the physician indicating the child understands the purpose, appropriate method, and frequency of use of the emergency medication.  This information is to be included in your health notes and the physician statement is to be turned into the summer school nurse.

    The nurse will not be on campus after August 5, 2019. If you need any medications returned, it is your responsibility to contact the nurse to set up a time you can come to campus. 
  • Transportation

    Transportation is available in the morning and afternoon. You may sign up for one-way or round-trip service.

    Come ride the bus! Our caring transportation professionals will make your life a little easier by picking up your child at one of our designated stops and returning them back to your at the end of the day. In an effort to join us as we do our part in reducing traffic and bringing campers together from throughout our region, enroll in our transportation program. You can sign up your child for round-trip or one way only.
