Summer Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

Job Summary: 
A Summer Camp Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all pool activities, swim lessons as assigned, and pool area care in conjunction with the Aquatic Program Director and Head Lifeguard. Lifeguards, while focused on pool activities, will ensure the safety and wellness of all the program participants.  The Swim Instructor is responsible for private and group lessons with the goal of advancing swimmers from their current skill level to the next.  (Work hours may begin as early as 9:30am and may end as late as 5:30pm but start and end work assignments depend on enrollment)

Please note, Lifeguards/Swim Instructors may be required to support camp programming on Friday field trips on in other areas of camp outside of the pool.

Program Dates: 
Overview:  June 13 – August 2 (including preplanning, setup, and orientation)

ALL REQUIRED EMPLOYMENT PAPERWORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE JUNE 7TH OR EARLIER TO REMAIN EMPLOYED BY ATHENIAN SUMMER PROGRAMS
  1. Staff training: June 13-14 (required attendance)
  2. Session 1: June 17 – June 28 (no camp on June 19)
  3. Session 2: July 8 – July 19
  4. Session 3: July 22- August 2
Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Participates in staff orientation, training, and meetings
  • Creates and maintains, without exception and with great care, expected safe environment in and at the pool by all swimmers
  • Maintains the pool through regular chemical checks and reporting pool status to Aquatics Director
  • Follows all camp/campus/pool rules and expectations
  • Guides individual campers and groups in participating in all pool activities and overall camp activities when assigned
  • Supervises swim test as assigned to determine camper ability to swim/play in the deep side of the pool
  • Teaches private swim lessons as assigned, identifying appropriate skills to teach in order to strengthen swimmers’ ability
  • Maintains readable, important notes on each camper’s swim skills development after each swim lesson. Provides end-of-camp swim lesson report to camper/families
  • Maintains good public relations with swimmer parents/guardians as well as all campers and their parents
  • Sets a good example for swimmers and others, including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up, and sportsmanship
  • Models respect of all people regardless of difference of race, sex, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability, national origin, ethnicity, or socio-economic status
  • Learns the likes/dislikes of swimmers in lesson contexts and campers overall
  • Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving with swimmers, campers, and colleagues
  • Provides opportunities for the group, when appropriate, so that each individual experiences fun in a safe environment at the pool or in camp activities
  • Provides opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns as appropriate
  • Enforces all pool and camp safety rules fairly and reasonably
  • Other duties may be assigned as required
  • May also work as a Camp Counselor when not acting as lifeguard, especially on Fridays for field trip support
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Trained and Certified, which includes certifications in both cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and proper operation of a defibrillator (AED).
  • Must complete 1 hour online harassment training before start date (unless already completed as an Athenian employee)
