Venture out.

During their junior year, students explore the beauty and open expanse of either the High Sierra mountains or the Death Valley desert. Working together in small groups to navigate off-trail terrain, cook group meals, rock climb, and set up camp, they come to appreciate the freedom from technology, routine, homework, and other responsibilities while learning how to care for themselves and others, collaborate, and problem-solve.

There is more in you than you know.

Kurt Hahn's philosophy, "there is more in you than you know," is something we help students discover through their 26-day wilderness experience. While on course, students learn how to work as a team, respond to and grow from setbacks, and deepen their appreciation and connection to nature. Alumni often cite AWE as one of the most impact of their Athenian experiences.

Below are more details about the Athenian Wilderness Experience. Twice a year, the campus is reinvigorated by the AWE participants' positive energy, enthusiasm, wonder, and self-awareness when they return to campus. We invite you to participate in the ceremonial end of their adventure to see for yourself the transformative experience that is AWE. Check the school calendar in early spring and and late summer for "Run-In'' specifics.
