Understanding Comes from Exploring

That’s why our Global Education Program goes beyond classroom learning. From meaningful experiences come deeper insights and a world of possibilities. Students venture out into the world through exchanges, international courses, and service projects around the world. They don’t just study the world—they experience it. Whether collaborating at international conferences or working on global challenges, they develop the skills, empathy, and perspective to become world-wise contributors and problem-solvers. It’s a journey that shapes not just what they learn, but who they’ll become and how they’ll impact the world around them.

Internationally Shared Values

Athenian’s 6-12 curriculum builds a foundation for international understanding. From Middle School Focus Days that center global issues to seminars in the Upper School that transport students around the world and across time, we intentionally set the stage for the many global experiences students have access to starting in 7th grade. By the time they graduate, most Athenian students have participated in at least one international experience, many through our Round Square affiliation.

What is Round Square?

Round Square is an international consortium of like-minded schools that connect and collaborate to help develop global competence in their students. Athenian is a founding member and upholds the six pillars or IDEALS of Round Square: internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership, and service. The pillars are infused throughout our program and curriculum. For example, Focus Days in the Middle School often integrate classroom material and a particular pillar, providing a hands-on opportunity to connect content and big-picture concepts. Likewise, in the Upper School, students participate in the democratic process through the student-run Town Meeting, enacting real change in their school community.
