  • Dungeons & Dragons with 3D Printing

    Cost: $435 (includes t-shirt)
    Instructor: JC Clontz
    Grades: 6-9

The Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is about storytelling in make-believe worlds of sword and sorcery. In this game, a group of players create imaginary characters and band together to embark on an imaginary adventure.  D&D provides structure to these adventures by using a set of rules combined with an element of chance to determine the consequences of the characters' actions. Players roll dice to resolve whether or not their character is able to accomplish some heroic feat or daring gambit. Anything is possible, but the dice make some things more probable than others.

Playing Dungeons & Dragons provides everyone opportunities to use and develop fundamental interpersonal, academic, and life-long skills. Thanks to the nature of the game being set in an imaginary world, players get to learn how to solve problems, resolve conflicts, manage resources, overcome adversity, and how to work together as a team, all in a safe environment. Playing D&D gives players a chance to exercise their organizational skills, analytical skills, basic math skills, and their imaginations. Players frequently need to be resourceful, resilient, and creative over the course of a game as a sudden plot twist in the story turns the characters' plans on their heads. And because D&D takes place in a make-believe fantasy world, it offers unlimited potential for self-expression. It's most valuable benefit, however, is that it simply gives people a chance to play a fun game together face to face with their friends -- and also a great platform to make lifelong relationships.

Students will be able to design and make their own characters during the first day or two of class, and their Instructor will print them on our 3D Printers (which they can keep and bring home after the term is over).
  • Speech & Debate

    Cost: $435 (includes t-shirt)
    Instructor: Dontae Hill, Athenian Faculty
    Grades: 4-8

This course will focus on the basics of Speech and Debate for young students. Students will learn about competitive events and participate in activities to learn how to present in front of a captivated audience. From fun public speaking games to real application, students will receive training to be their best at competitive Theater, Public Speaking and Debate–aka Speech and Debate.

Instructor Dontae Hill aka “The Forensics Guy” has been involved in Speech and Debate for over a decade. The Forensics Guy has dedicated his life to the activity and found a variety of ways to live out his mantra of making sure that every student has the opportunity to be impacted by Forensics. In 2013 he created Forensics Forever which originally began as an organization hosting Speech and Debate classes for elementary students in Wisconsin and is now a league that hosts online Speech and Debate tournaments for all students grades 3-12.
Dontae is also the Athenian School Speech and Debate Instructor for the Upper School and Middle School.
Please note there will be no classes October 17 or November 11, 2024.
