All boarding students belong to a Residential Family Group, in which a faculty member takes care of a group of students. They celebrate birthdays, study together monthly, go out for dinner and activities, and just have fun. Students often share a deep connection with the faculty member’s family.

Twice each month the entire residential community, students and faculty, gather for a reflection and special meal. Once a week students and adults in each dorm meet to discuss residential issues and upcoming events, celebrate dorm accomplishments, and talk about multicultural issues.

Every weekend boarders participate in FAB’s (Fun Activities for Boarders) ranging from going to a special restaurant, an event in Oakland, or a sporting event. Some FAB’s involve playing games in a faculty member’s home. You can always find something to do with a friend on a weekend.

Residence Halls

The Athenian School has three dorms that house 8-22 students. Each dorm has its own Dorm Parent, Dorm Prefect, and Live-In Residential Faculty member who work together to create a safe, fun, and comfortable living and learning community. As a boarder, you will live in a double- or triple-occupancy room your freshmen year. After that, you will have the option to live in a single room if available. Each dorm has a common area, shared bathrooms, and a laundry room. Exercise equipment, games, and a TV are available in a shared lounge for all the boarding students.

Your Athenian Family

Transferring from my high school in China to Athenian, I was so worried about whether I could get enough help and care from my new Athenian peers and teachers. When I first moved into the dorm, I was surprised by how my dorm mom greeted me as a family member. Her warm welcome, as well as the friendly greetings from other returning boarders, provided me with the confidence to become part of this special and inclusive community. As I’m now a dorm prefect,  the memory of their welcoming also inspires me to offer a hand to other newcomers. As I got to know more day students and build a personal relationship with the teachers, I found that the kindness of the boarding community is truly shared by every single member of Athenian. As my time at Athenian grows longer, my ties grow stronger to this school, a community I am proud to call home. -Amanda Wu '14
When you join our boarding program, you become a part of the Athenian family. Not only will you make friends with your new classmates and living mates, you will be paired with an on-campus faculty member as well as a family in the local community through the Boarder Buddy Program. Residential faculty host boarding students in their homes for family dinners, join them in the Main Hall for meals, hire them to babysit their kids, and welcome them into their families. Within the dorms, there are also student Prefects, juniors and seniors who are selected role models and peer counselors within the boarding community. From moving in to study help to a quick snack, our residential community is here for you 24/7.
