Camp Counselor
Job Summary:
A Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for planning and implementing the summer camp activities in conjunction with their program director and lead teachers as appropriate. The Summer Camp Counselors will oversee a small group of campers, participate in all camp activities, supervise a small group during lunch, and supervise campers during morning/afternoon care, pick-up/drop-off, the swim period (in or out of the pool), and on field trips. Counselors will ensure the safety and wellness of all the program participants.
Program Dates/Work Times:
June 13 – August 2 – which includes pre-summer planning and training. Shifts not to exceed 5 hours, unless approved by Directors of camps listed above or Director of Summer Programs and After School Enrichment. (Exceptions may include, but are not limited to: teaching roles, morning or after care, field trips).
ALL REQUIRED EMPLOYMENT PAPERWORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE JUNE 7TH OR EARLIER TO REMAIN EMPLOYED BY ATHENIAN SUMMER PROGRAMS
- Staff training: June 13-14 (required attendance)
- Session 1: June 17 – June 28
- Session 2: July 8 – July 19
Session 3: July 22- August 2
Duties & Responsibilities
- Participates in staff orientation and training and any staff meetings called as needed
- Identifies and meets campers needs while carrying out camp program, such as: hanging out with kids who look lonely or by themselves, noticing when a camper looks sad, making it a point to remember individual campers’ names, including campers who aren’t being included, redirecting campers if they are not following directions, intervening when campers are misbehaving
- Follows all camp/campus rules and expectations
- Guides individual campers and groups in participating in all camp activities, including field trips
- Supervises all aspects of the campers’ day, including: activities, lunch/snack time, pool time, field trips, extended care and bus arrival and departure as assigned
- Supports lead teachers as assigned
- Carries out established roles and protocols for supervising campers’ health and safety
- Maintains good public relations with camper parents/guardians
- Sets a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up, and sportsmanship
- Models respect of all people regardless of difference of race, sex, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability,
- national origin, ethnicity, or socio-economic status
- Learns the likes/dislikes of campers, gets to know campers as individuals
- Participates in swimming during open pool time – as requested. Exemptions will be honored for illness, injury, or special circumstance
- Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving with campers and colleagues
- Provides opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns as appropriate
- Expected to stay until all jobs are fulfilled and camp cleanup/packing/storage is complete on the last day of camp
- Other duties may be assigned as required
- CPR / AED TRAINED AND CERTIFIED required– must participate in CPR training during orientation days.
- Must complete 1 hour online harassment training before start date (unless already completed as an Athenian employee)
